This 90-minute continuing education session offers an up-to-date, evidence-informed review of iron deficiency assessment and IV iron therapy. The session begins with a review of the new diagnostic criteria for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), emphasizing ferritin thresholds, transferrin saturation, and the importance of recognizing non-anemic iron deficiency. Red blood cell indices, inflammation-adjusted lab interpretation, and emerging guidelines will be discussed. The majority of the session will focus on clinical use of intravenous iron. Participants will review safety profiles, dosing protocols (including the Ganzoni formula and simplified weight-based methods), product selection, contraindications, and management of hypersensitivity reactions. Real-world considerations for IV administration, vascular access, and risk mitigation strategies will be included, making this session highly practical for regulated healthcare professionals administering or prescribing IV iron.
